The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is conducting a study to better understand the type and amount of mail and packages households receive and send. The information will be used to make decisions about postage rates and staffing needs to ensure an efficient and cost-effective national mail system. Upon completion, your household will receive a monetary gift in appreciation of your time.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will track your household’s mail and packages for 7 days. This includes logging the mail and packages your household sends and receives and answering a few general questions about your household.

You can participate online using a mobile device, tablet, or computer (a laptop or desktop works best). If you prefer, you can request a paper survey by emailing the project team at uspssurvey@norc.org.

Yes, you will receive a monetary gift for your participation, in the amount indicated on your postcard invitation, delivered electronically or by check. Electronic gift cards are sent via email and typically arrive within 1 week. Checks may take 1-2 weeks to be delivered by mail.

Anyone aged 18 or older who lives in your household and is knowledgeable about the mail your household sends and receives can complete the survey. That person will be asked to record information about the mail sent and received for one week.

How long it takes depends on how much mail you send and receive. The first day of your diary-recording week will take the longest as you become more familiar with the survey. After that, on average, it should only take about 1-2 minutes for each piece of mail.
